Rethinking FDM

Beyond conventional layer-by-layer manufacturing.

Conventional FDM is built around a simple principle: material is deposited in successive planar layers. This approach is highly versatile, but it also introduces fundamental constraints.

Part orientation, anisotropic mechanical properties, overhangs, deposition direction and toolpath geometry are strongly influenced by the planar nature of the process. At higher deposition rates, extrusion performance, thermal behaviour and machine dynamics introduce additional limitations.

MYCNC3D investigates these constraints as parts of the same manufacturing problem. Rather than optimizing a single component in isolation, our research considers the interaction between machine motion, material deposition and toolpath generation.

GeometryMove beyond strictly planar deposition strategies.
MotionCoordinate more complex machine kinematics.
MaterialIncrease throughput while retaining process control.
SoftwareGenerate trajectories that exploit new machine capabilities.
